Rhodes' Appeal
The "Rhodes Appeal" is a text adopted under the "International Meeting for the prevention of the installation of new nuclear plants", which took place on May 2005, in Rhodes with the participation of scientists and organizations from Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Cyprus.
The appeal was circulated in Rhodes, Athens, around Greece and other countries. A total of more than 7,000 people signed it.
The Rhodes' Appeal text:
"We, the undersigned citizens from different countries and nationalities, of different ideologies, political and religious beliefs, but with the common wish and purpose to live in a clean Environment and a World free of the threat of a nuclear holocaust, raise our voices to prevent the construction of new nuclear plants and to stop the function of the existing ones in the Mediterranean region.
Nearly twenty years after the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl, a large number of the Europe’s population is still suffering its long-lasting consequences. At the beginning of the 21st century the entire world acknowledges that our planet is threatened as never before by a new nuclear threat. We therefore address our governments and ask them to find solutions to the energy problem, solutions that can be provided by nature, far from the threat of yet another nuclear catastrophe.
No responsible and sensitive person can stand by impassively and do nothing! It is an obligation that we all have to the present and future generations."
The collection of signs for the Rhodes' Appeal has ended. If you have signed lists please forward them to MANW for archiving.
